PLEASE RATE This is the Goodman heat pump at my Grandma’s roughly 3800 square foot condo in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I actually think it is quieter in heat mode than it is in air-conditioner mode, and while it is noisy and shakes the house, it does do a great job of cooling and an okay job of heating the house. I also start acting like a kid and get a laugh out of brushing snow into the moving fan. A little info about my Grandma’s neighborhood; the homes are all 3 bedrooms with 2.5 or 3.5 bathrooms, ranging in size from 2500 square feet to about 3000 square feet. The majority of the homes have since had their basements finished and square footage is closer to 4000, with 4-5 bedrooms and 4-5 full bathrooms. They were all built between 1993 and 1995. There are 10 buildings each with 3 homes. Each floorplan was designed by a different architect, but they were all built to look the same externally. These homes are big enough to be single family homes, but because they are attached and the residents do not own the land, they are considered condos.

Not likely. The hard copper refrigerant lines would need to be removed and disconnected then reconnected after the feet are installed. It’s not a huge priority, just helps those systems last longer, and the one that I had damage occur to was an absolute bottom of the barrel residential brand I would rather not name (its not Goodman, they actually are decent for residential use)

Can the unit be mounted on feet without having to disconnect it or do any major modifications? Like, can it just be lifted up and have the feet installed?

  • eggman9713:

That heat pump really should be on mounting feet to keep the ice which melts off the coil during the defrost cycle from building up in the bottom of the unit. I actually had a coil get pinched shut at the bottom from ice formation when the idiots who installed my system 15 years ago didnt put it on feet.

I agree that it should be mounted on a rack or blocks, but any weirdness with the fan blades is caused by the camera.

Not entirely true; some newer heat pumps can actually heat well into the twenties. This Goodman actually does a decent job of heating the house. This house also has a propane-fired boiler linked in with the heating system. It is not hooked up right now though.

For the most part though, I do agree with you. In Northern climates, heat pumps are about as powerful as a fart in a hurricane.

Heat Pumps are worthless below 46 degrees. She should be using the emergency heat mode…
Heat pumps consume about 2 to 4 amps more in heat mode than cooling mode.

it funny to see the fans on these things run it the winter time!!

  • heatpumpsaver:

This unit should be on a rack 18 inches from ground and the fan motor does not work good it should be change to

  • resarchitecture01:

Yes. It does seem much louder than heat mode.
