I show how to ohm compressor windings with a megohmmeter. The guy in my intro that wears the pink shirt and wig is edbassmaster. You can check him out at: www.youtube.com The music was played and composed by Champagne Millionaire. You can check him out at: profile.myspace.com

Ok this may sound stupid because I’ve been a tech for almost 10 yrs. now. But, I’ve always been told that if a compressor reads resistance to ground its dead. Under the assumption that it would in fact be tripping breakers. I’ve noticed several of the commercial systems I work on w/ 3 phase compressors, and also a few residential systems do read resistance to ground. Does this mean the compressor needs replaced even though it runs perfectly?

moisture, refrigerant, and oil can all affect megohm readings. I have fan motors on one site that regularly check out at 8-15 megohms and they’re running away with no end in sight.

Also, it’s important to use the proper voltage setting when testing and to perform a standing megohm test.

The best practice with a megger as a maintenance is to trend your readings and keep a log. Over time, you can actually visibly see the deterioration of the equipment.
